REASONS TO TAKE YOUR WINTER BREAK IN SALCOMBE, SOUTH DEVON

Christmas can be a pretty stressful time of year. Yes, there’s a wonderful atmosphere as everyone gets into the festive spirit, yes it’s great to see the faces of loved ones light up as they unwrap those presents, and yes it’s also lovely to open up your own presents. But in the run up there’s all the Christmas shopping to do, cards to write and send out, the turkey to prepare and the last tub of brandy butter to hunt out in the supermarket on Christmas Eve.

It’s little wonder that many people use the Christmas period as a time to get away from it all, even if just for a few days. Getting out of the country for some winter sun can be tempting, but even that can add to the stress. Instead consider heading down to charming South Devon and staying in a holiday cottage in Salcombe.

Salcombe is one of Devon’s most beautiful resorts, and can be a perfect winter getaway location thanks to its comparatively mild climate, and the fact that as a summer town it will be generally less crowded around the winter months.

Here are some ideas for what to do during your stay:

1.Enjoy The Scenery. At this time of year the area around Salcombe takes on an austere beauty, with trees stripped bare and the low sunlight glinting on the rippling waters of the estuary and sea. Make the most of it and get out for a walk in the refreshing winter air. You can follow the South West Coast Path out from the town in either direction. Head west to Hope Cove and enjoy the rugged coastline that the area is famous for. Keep an eye out for wintering birds as the area is a favoured destination for many species of migratory birds.

2. Eat Out. When you’re staying in a self-catering holiday cottage in Salcombe you’ll probably be doing a fair bit of cooking. Fortunately there’s a range of artisan shops and delicatessens so you’ll be able to buy everything you need. However make sure you get out and enjoy some of the fine dining opportunities. Many restaurants in Salcombe serve up incredible sea food, all with local fresh caught catch. Unwinding on a winter’s evening in a candlelit restaurant with a loved one and a glass of wine will melt away the Christmas stress.

3. Relax In Front Of The Fire. What could be better than sitting in front of a roaring open fire in a quaint, low-ceiling Devon pub with a winter warmer? Salcombe has several traditional pubs, many of which have a delightful rustic feel. You’ll find quality drinks and food as well as a welcoming atmosphere, so pull up a chair, grab a glass of mulled wine and relax in front of the fire out of the winter chill. Then after you’ve finished, head back to your cosy Salcombe holiday cottage and enjoy the clear, winter night time sky.

There you have it. If you’re considering a calming Winter trip away from the hustle and bustle, then Salcombe should definitely be on your consideration list.
