United Airlines Flight Diverts to Chicago After Cockpit Displays Fail

On September 26, 2024, United Airlines flight UA231 from Los Angeles to London Heathrow was forced to make an emergency diversion to Chicago O'Hare Airport after the captain's cockpit displays went dark. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was cruising at 35,000 feet when its flight management systems entered a degraded mode, causing the primary flight and navigation displays to fail.

The incident occurred as the aircraft passed over Manitoba and Hudson Bay. The captain declared a mayday due to limited flight capabilities and turned the plane back to Chicago, United's headquarters and a hub with extensive maintenance resources.

Despite the technical challenges, the flight crew successfully navigated using alternative tools and vectors, landing safely at Chicago O'Hare at 21:51 local time.

Passengers were rebooked onto a replacement aircraft, which departed a few hours later at 01:24 on September 27, and landed in London Heathrow at 15:02. The replacement plane, a Boeing 787-10, experienced a subsequent delay on its return flight to Denver, Colorado, but managed to make up time and arrived just 75 minutes behind schedule.
