Greece’s Pig Beach Draws Crowds - and a Warning

A Greek island where black pigs paddle through turquoise water has become an unlikely stop on Ionian boat tours. Atokos, a privately owned island near Ithaca, drew international attention after videos showed animals roaming a pebble beach alongside swimmers. The unusual sight has now attracted organised excursions and concerns over what frequent visits mean for the pigs. Getting there is possible, but it is no ordinary beach day.

Visitors usually arrive by excursion boat, as Atokos has no regular ferry or visitor facilities. The pigs wander freely and sometimes enter the sea, rather than performing in scheduled encounters. In September, Greece’s Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation warned that feeding and close contact could harm them. It also called for an investigation into reported propeller injuries; those allegations have not been established as fact.

Visiting Atokos: Boats, Prices and Access

  • Where: One House Bay on Atokos, near Ithaca.
  • Access: Boat trips or charters; no ferry.
  • Sample tour: Odyssey Boats leaves Vathy around 09:30–10:00; five hours.
  • Cost: €95 per person, minimum six paying places; smaller groups pay for six.
  • Facilities: No shops or visitor services.
  • Booking: Check availability, itinerary, sea conditions and what is included.

An Atokos visit can be part of a longer day around Ithaca. The Vathy excursion also lists stops at Nisaki/Kritami, Gidaki Beach and Skinos Bay, with snorkelling and swimming depending on conditions. Boat trips also depart from Lefkada and Kefalonia; one Nidri cruise advertises a full-day route via Meganisi and Ithaca. Compare itineraries carefully: not every boat stop guarantees passengers can go ashore.

Because Atokos is privately owned and the pigs roam freely, neither a beach landing nor an animal sighting is guaranteed. A boat trip is a better fit for people happy to explore several Ionian bays than for anyone booking solely for a pig selfie. Keep your distance, do not feed or corner the animals, and choose operators that treat wildlife sightings as optional rather than promising close encounters.
