UK–Spain Winter Flights Offer 170,000 Fewer Seats
Airlines have scheduled roughly 170,000 fewer seats on UK flights to the Canary Islands and Málaga for winter 2026–27. The reductions affect several popular Spanish holiday routes, but they are not a list of cancelled flights or bookings. The impact varies sharply by island, and travellers with fixed dates may find the difference between destinations more important than the headline figure.
Where to Look for Winter Flights
- Already booked: Reduced seat capacity does not automatically affect your ticket.
- Canary Islands: Check your chosen island and UK departure airport separately.
- Málaga: Compare flights from alternative UK airports, including London Luton.
- Package trips: Contact your holiday organiser if an actual flight change affects the booking.
- Cancelled flight: Ask the airline about rerouting or a refund under UK rules.
The Canary Islands expect 104,097 fewer seats from Britain this winter, down 3.2%. Gran Canaria accounts for 34,161 fewer seats and Lanzarote 33,928. In percentage terms, La Palma faces the largest drop, with UK capacity halved, compared with just 1.1% fewer seats for Tenerife. The figures concern scheduled UK flights; total capacity to the archipelago from all countries is forecast to rise by 3.9%.
Málaga faces a 5% reduction in seats from Britain between October 2026 and March 2027, but the airport still expects links with 18 UK cities. Routes listed by airport operator Aena include Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow and several London airports. Wizz Air now flies London Luton–Málaga four times weekly, joining easyJet and Ryanair on the route, so passengers still have choices beyond one airline or departure airport.
La Palma is where checking an alternative route could matter most. The island has flights via Gran Canaria and Tenerife North, but a UK flight landing at Tenerife South may require a separate airport transfer. Bus 343 links Tenerife’s two airports in around 50 minutes, with limited daily departures. If booking separate flights, leave enough time for that transfer and remember a missed connection may not be protected.
