Spain’s Rail Shutdown Sparks Two New Wizz Air Routes

Wizz Air begins temporary flights linking Madrid with Málaga and Seville on Friday, 6 November, after a fatal train collision disrupted Spain’s high-speed rail corridor to Andalusia. The accident near Urda, Toledo, on 28 October halted direct high-speed services between the capital and southern Spain. The new flights give people with cancelled rail journeys another option while the railway remains closed.

The flights take around 80 minutes, but passengers should factor in airport transfers and security checks before choosing between air and ground transport. Tickets can be booked with Wizz Air. Málaga Airport’s C1 train reaches the city centre in about 12 minutes and serves coastal resorts such as Torremolinos and Fuengirola. In Seville, the EA airport bus costs €6 one way and stops near Santa Justa station and the centre, convenient for visiting the cathedral and Alcázar. Adif says the Málaga–Seville high-speed line remains open for onward journeys despite the wider disruption.
The new services are scheduled only until 13 December, and Adif has not confirmed when direct high-speed trains between Madrid and Andalusia will resume. Renfe is offering free changes and cancellations for affected bookings, alongside replacement buses between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Puertollano through 12 November. Passengers should check their existing rail ticket before paying for alternative transport, especially when travelling with luggage.
