Turkey Travel Advice Updated Over Social Media Posts
British travellers heading to Turkey should note an FCDO travel advice update issued on 18 September highlighting laws covering comments about the Turkish nation, flag, President and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The guidance says insulting them can be a criminal offence, including through online comments or images regardless of where or when they were posted. Most major holiday areas remain outside FCDO no-go zones, although separate regional restrictions still apply near Syria.
The update does not introduce a new nationwide warning against travel. FCDO continues to advise against all travel within 10km of the Turkey-Syria border because of fighting and a heightened terrorism risk. It also warns that wider Middle East tensions remain unpredictable and could still trigger flight cancellations, airspace closures or other disruption. Istanbul, Antalya and Bodrum are not included in the Syria-border restriction.
The legal warning is easy to miss because it can apply to material posted online before a trip. FCDO says insulting the Turkish nation or flag, the President, or Atatürk is punishable by six months to three years in prison, and defacing Turkish banknotes is also illegal. Same-sex activity remains legal, but the guidance notes increased restrictions on LGBT+ organisations and says public displays of affection may attract unwanted attention in socially conservative areas.
