Most air passengers are happy to use biometrics to get through airport checks, but the security of their personal data remains a major concern. A new survey from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) found that 78% of travelers are ready to share biometric data to avoid repeated document checks, but 59% are concerned about potential data breaches.

The IATA survey, published on October 28, included more than 10,000 respondents from over 200 countries. Over the past 12 months, 58% had used biometric systems at airports at least once, up from 50% a year earlier. Among those who had tried the technology, 87% were satisfied with the experience.

However, convenience does not eliminate concerns. Beyond potential data breaches, 49% of passengers are worried about their information being shared with other organizations, while 41% are concerned about a lack of transparency in how personal data is handled.

European travelers are somewhat more cautious about biometrics than the global average. Although most are willing to use the technology to speed up airport checks, fewer than half of respondents in the region had used such systems over the past year. The figure was higher worldwide.

Amid these concerns, IATA announced the first One ID digital identity certifications. They were awarded to Air New Zealand and Hong Kong International Airport. The certifications confirm that both organizations meet IATA standards, including requirements for biometric data handling, privacy and passenger consent.

But using biometrics to speed up some airport checks doesn't mean travelers can fly without a physical passport just yet. Some airports may still ask to see your passport, even after you've passed a biometric check.
