Italy has temporarily restored selective border checks for passengers arriving on flights from Spain, changing the usual passport-free process within Schengen. The measure follows the migration crisis in Ceuta and is expected to remain in place for one month. Flights are continuing normally, but travellers may face document checks after landing in Italy and should allow extra time before onward connections.

What to Expect After Landing in Italy

  • Measure: Selective checks on arrivals from Spain
  • Status: Now in force at Italian airports
  • Expected duration: One month
  • Main focus: Non-EU nationals
  • Transport covered: Flights, with wider checks also applying to sea arrivals
  • Flight operations: Continuing as scheduled
  • Required document: A valid passport or national identity card accepted for international travel
  • Advice: Keep supporting visa or residence documents available where relevant

The measure is not a closure of Italy’s border with Spain and does not suspend scheduled air services. Italian authorities have said the checks are targeted mainly at non-EU nationals, while Spanish and other EU citizens retain freedom of movement. Airport notices still advise every passenger to carry valid identification, as officers may conduct checks on a sample basis after arrival.

Because flights remain in operation, holidays and city breaks between Spain and Italy can continue as planned. Visitors can still travel to Rome’s historic sites, Venice’s canals, Milan’s museums or onward journeys to Naples and Pompeii. The main difference comes after landing, when an additional document check may lengthen the journey through the airport or reduce the time available for a connection.

The change affects airport processing rather than the ability to travel between Spain and Italy. Most journeys should continue without major disruption, but arrival times may become less predictable during busy periods. Travellers using separate tickets or arranging their own transfers face the greatest risk if queues develop. Until the checks are lifted, choosing a longer connection is safer than relying on the minimum transfer time shown when booking.
