As anticipation builds for the second leg of the UEFA Nations League playoff between Scotland and Greece, set for Sunday, March 24, First Bus has introduced an express travel option aimed at easing matchday congestion. The X31 Hampden Express will run from Glasgow city centre to Hampden Park every 20 minutes starting at 3:30pm, offering football fans a direct, scheduled link between key points in the city and the stadium.

The service begins at Union Street, near O’Neill’s Bar, and drops passengers close to the West Stand on Cathcart Road. Post-match, the return journey stops at Stockwell Street, Glassford Street, and George Square, helping to distribute crowds efficiently back into the city. Adult tickets cost £3.20 one way or £5.20 for a two-trip pass, while children can access return fares for £2.50—making this a budget-friendly option for supporters.

This event-specific route also benefits travellers unfamiliar with Glasgow’s public transport system. Visitors arriving for the game or spending the weekend in the city will find the X31 an accessible alternative to more complicated local travel networks. It’s a time-saving solution for those staying centrally and eliminates the need to navigate unfamiliar bus schedules or risk delays via other modes of transport on a busy matchday.

Other than football, the introduction of these express services that are temporary in nature indicate how cities can optimize infrastructure for infrequent but high-level demand. For visitors it is an opportunity to merge local sport events into their plans without worrying about logistics, providing for a more uncluttered and pleasurable urban experience. These initiatives can also encourage more sustainable travel habits, reducing reliance on cars or rideshares.

For anyone looking to travel around major events this just reaffirms the need of finding temporary city-wide transit services. Event-linked mobility options don’t just support crowd control—they also enrich the visitor experience by offering direct, dependable, and affordable access to key venues. Glasgow’s X31 is a strong example of how tailored transport can elevate short-term tourism planning.
