Cancelled Train? New Rule Lets You Switch Operators for Free
Passengers using participating rail operators can now switch to another participating company at no extra cost when their booked train is cancelled. The expanded scheme took effect on Sunday 20 September 2026 and added Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry and Great Western Railway to existing cross-operator ticket acceptance. It aims to stop customers buying replacement tickets while operators arrange acceptance during disruption.
The change applies to customers holding a valid ticket for a cancelled train. They may use a participating operator on a direct or reasonable alternative route, provided the replacement service departs within two hours before or after the original train. Passengers only need to show the original ticket to staff; no replacement ticket or app download is required. East Midlands Railway is expected to join later.

How the New Ticket Rule Works
- Start date: 20 September 2026.
- Trigger: the booked train must be cancelled.
- Cost: no extra fare for the alternative service.
- You can take another participating train up to two hours before or after your cancelled service.
- The replacement journey can be direct or use another reasonable route to your destination.
- Keep your original ticket with you and show it to staff if asked. You do not need to download or collect a new one.
- Operators: 17 currently participate, including Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, LNER, Northern and South Western Railway.
- Not yet included: East Midlands Railway.
The scheme does not remove existing refund and delay-compensation rights. If disruption means you decide not to travel, all ticket types can be refunded by the original retailer without an administration fee. If you continue your journey and arrive late, you may be entitled to compensation from the train company responsible for the delay. The main benefit is avoiding a second fare when a cancellation leaves a workable alternative nearby. Before boarding, confirm that the replacement train is run by a participating operator, falls within the two-hour window and uses a direct or reasonable alternative route. If the next practical service falls outside those conditions, ask station staff rather than assuming your original ticket will automatically be accepted.
