Police reprimanded a tourist who was walking shirtless on the street in Japan
Japanese police reprimanded a tourist from Australia for walking down the street with a bare torso. In the country, it is not customary to walk without a T-shirt or shirt in public places.
Turan William Salis, a former sheep shearer turned travel vlogger, was recording a new video in a supermarket when he was approached by an officer. He described the incident in a video he posted on TikTok.
The officer used a translator app on his cell phone to ask the Australian why he was walking around without a shirt, an action that is not illegal but socially unacceptable.
"I'd like to talk to you now," the officer said through the app. "Have you been walking around with your upper body bare?"
"Yes, without a shirt," Turan admitted.
The officer politely told Turan that he was "not allowed to be naked from the waist up in the city," to which the Australian immediately apologized, explaining that he had just returned from swimming at the beach.
Turan said that after he gave the officer his passport, he was allowed to continue his live broadcast.
