Ryanair’s August survey has identified significant price increases by several online travel agencies (OTAs) when compared to the airline’s official website. The findings show that eDreams, Tix, Vola and Latamy operate without formal agreements with Ryanair and apply some of the highest markups on both tickets and additional services, with certain charges reaching more than double the airline’s own prices.

The airline stressed that such practices represent ongoing harm to consumers, particularly those booking through unauthorised OTAs without checking airline prices directly. Despite repeated requests for intervention, many European governments, consumer ministers, and regulatory bodies have not taken concrete steps to address the issue. Ryanair contrasted these agencies with its "Approved OTA" partners, which follow the airline’s transparent pricing policies. Spain was singled out as a notable case where no sanctions have been imposed on eDreams despite repeated overcharging.

The findings offer a clear warning to travellers about the dangers of using unauthorised booking platforms. Opting to book straight from the airline’s site can prevent travellers from paying extra for identical products and services. As price variations on online travel agencies aren’t always clear immediately, it’s important for travellers to check multiple sources before booking. When passengers are more aware of prices, they can make smarter and more budget-friendly travel choices.

The survey’s publication may also lead to calls for stronger consumer protection measures across the European Union. Ryanair has urged authorities to enforce mandatory transparency in OTA pricing to prevent misleading cost structures. If implemented, such measures could benefit travellers by ensuring they receive accurate information about flight and service prices before making a booking. Improved regulations could also help restore confidence in online travel marketplaces.

We call on EU Govts and Consumer Protection Authorities to take action against these OTA overcharges, which are causing real harm to consumers all over Europe and particularly in Spain where the overcharging OTA, eDreams, has a large footprint.

This report serves as a reminder for passengers to remain vigilant when navigating online booking options. Checking airline websites and confirming details before paying helps travellers safeguard their budgets and steer clear of surprise charges. The results highlight the ongoing need for better regulation of online travel agencies to protect European travelers from unfair pricing that still impacts many consumers.
