Intense summer wildfires have broken out in several areas of Spain and Portugal at the peak of the holiday season. The fires broke out during a prolonged period of intense heat in the region, sparking major firefighting efforts to get them under control. Authorities in both countries are actively working to put out the fires and keep people safe. At the same time, travellers are reminded to stay alert to the situation, keep track of official news, and pay attention to any updates during their journeys.

In Spain, the Madrid area has recorded one fatality linked to the fires, with evacuations carried out as temperatures exceeded 40°C. The national meteorological service has forecast highs of 44°C in Seville. Fires have been confirmed in several regions, leading to evacuations from homes, hotels and beaches, including:

  • Castile and Leon
  • Castile-La Mancha
  • Andalusia
  • Galicia

In the Tres Cantos region, more than 1,000 hectares of land were destroyed before the fire was brought under control.

In Portugal, an active wildfire is still burning in the municipality of Trancoso, a town situated to the northeast of Lisbon. More than 700 firefighters are battling to bring the flames under control and protect nearby communities. Local authorities are asking people in the area to follow all safety instructions and stay out of places where firefighters are working, as the situation is still difficult and potentially dangerous. Additional firefighting equipment has been deployed to support ongoing operations.

As of 12 August, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has not issued any specific travel warnings for Spain or Portugal regarding the ongoing wildfires. People travelling to or already in the affected regions should keep an eye on official safety updates and do what local authorities advise. Travellers are advised to stay away from unsafe areas and keep a few key items on hand, including:

  • Identification documents
  • Drinking water
  • Protective masks
  • Device chargers

Checking your travel routes ahead of time is important, and it’s wise to keep up with any updates about changes to local conditions.

The current wildfires in Spain and Portugal show how important it is for travellers to stay alert and be ready to adjust their plans when organising trips during the summer months. Conditions in affected areas can change rapidly, and even regions not directly impacted by flames may experience smoke, air quality issues or access restrictions to certain sites. By closely following official updates, adhering to local safety advice, and maintaining contingency plans, visitors can reduce potential disruptions and travel more safely in the current circumstances.
