Passport Foil Hack Goes Viral - but Does It Work?

A viral travel trend is encouraging holidaymakers to wrap biometric passports in aluminium foil to stop supposed contactless data theft. The idea has spread on TikTok, Reddit and travel forums, but German authorities do not require or recommend foil shielding for ePassports. German passports already use access-control and encryption mechanisms designed to restrict unauthorised access to data stored on the chip.

The chip is not an open contactless tag that can simply be read in passing. Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security says the ePassport uses PACE to establish a secure connection using data derived from the machine-readable zone, while fingerprints receive additional protection through Extended Access Control. German law also requires data stored on the chip to be protected against unauthorised reading, alteration and deletion.

What German Passport Holders Need to Know

  • Country: Germany.
  • Rule change: None; there is no requirement to shield passports with foil.
  • Effective date and validity: Not applicable.
  • Who it concerns: Holders of German biometric passports.
  • Chip data: Facial image, fingerprints for applicants aged six and over unless an exemption applies, and machine-readable passport details.
  • Fingerprint exceptions: Children under six and people whose fingerprints cannot be taken for long-term medical reasons.
  • Before travel: No special shielding is required; present the passport normally.
  • Official sources: Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security and Passport Act.

The viral claim also overstates what is stored on the chip. German law says it contains the facial image, fingerprints and data from the machine-readable zone; eye colour, height and place of residence may appear elsewhere in the passport but are not included in the chip dataset specified by Section 4(3). Germany does not maintain a nationwide database of passport biometrics, and fingerprints stored by the passport authority must be deleted no later than when the passport is handed over.

German official guidance therefore gives travellers no reason to wrap their passports in foil before a trip. The document’s security relies on access controls built into the ePassport rather than an external RFID barrier. The useful precaution is simply to keep the passport secure and undamaged and remove it from any cover when border staff need to inspect it, rather than adding a layer that has no role in German passport requirements.
