A significant development is underway in Florence, Italy, with the construction of a new €2.7 billion train station set to enhance travel across Tuscany. The new Firenze Belfiore Station aims to alleviate pressure on the existing Firenze Santa Maria Novella station and become the city's main transport hub by 2028.

Firenze Belfiore Station, designed by Foster + Partners and engineered by Arup, will be located in one of Florence's historic quarters. The station will span 47,000 square meters across four levels, including a concourse and a platform level situated 25 meters underground. Additionally, the new station will feature a large urban park and a public square entrance, along with an underground bus station and parking facilities.

This new infrastructure is designed to improve passenger flow and optimize transport links both within Florence and across Italy. The station's steel and glass roof will allow natural light to flood the concourse and other areas, enhancing the passenger experience.

Gianpiero Strisciuglio, head of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, highlighted the importance of this project for the region, stating, "This is a very important moment for Florence, Tuscany, and the mobility of the entire country. This work will improve the quality of public transport, speed up connections, and separate the flow of traffic."

Firenze Belfiore Station will also be integrated into Italy's new high-speed rail network, which will extend from Milan to Naples and Turin to Venice. This network will cover over 1,000 km of railway lines and include new stations in Rome, Turin, Naples, and Florence.

Upon completion, the new station is expected to make train travel across Tuscany more efficient and accessible, significantly improving rail connections in the region.
