ITA Airways celebrated the successful landing of its first direct flight from Rome Fiumicino at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana. The Airbus A321neo aircraft was greeted with a traditional water arch salute, marking the airline’s debut in sub-Saharan Africa.

The return flight from Accra to Rome departed at 11:45 p.m. local time, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Accra Airport’s Terminal 3. This event saw participation from notable dignitaries including Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director for Ghana Airports Company Limited, and Daniela d'Orlandi, Ambassador of Italy to Ghana and Togo.

The introduction of this direct route signifies ITA Airways' first foray into the African market, highlighting its strategic importance. ITA Airways aims to boost both leisure and business travel between the two countries, leveraging Ghana’s reputation as the gateway to Africa. This move is anticipated to foster stronger trade, investment, and cultural links.

Daniela d'Orlandi expressed optimism about the enhanced collaboration between Italy and Ghana due to the new flight route. Meanwhile, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare highlighted the readiness of Kotoka International Airport to facilitate smooth operations for passengers.

The new Accra–Rome route is expected to operate thrice weekly, with an increase to four weekly flights starting in July. This expansion is part of ITA Airways' broader plan to establish a stronger presence in West Africa, with an upcoming Rome-Dakar flight scheduled for inauguration next month.

Flights will be operated by the Airbus A321neo, a state-of-the-art aircraft offering superior range and performance. The A321neo features Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes, all designed to embody Italian elegance and style. Passengers can look forward to enhanced comfort, including advanced entertainment systems and spacious seating.

As ITA Airways continues to expand, it aims to operate 57 destinations this summer, including popular tourist spots in the Mediterranean. This new direct route to Accra not only serves as a significant milestone for the airline but also promises to bring Italy and Ghana closer together through improved connectivity.
