The Great British Rail Sale will return in January 2026, offering discounted train tickets across almost the entire rail network in Britain. Tickets will be available to buy between 6 and 12 January, with travel valid on thousands of routes between 13 January and 25 March. More than three million tickets will be included, covering advance and off-peak fares on services run by nearly all train operators.

The sale follows a government decision to freeze rail fares, marking the first such move in three decades. Lower fares will apply to regular journeys such as commuting, short leisure trips, and travel during school half-term periods, covering the kinds of trips many people already make by train. The initiative builds on previous editions of the Rail Sale, which have consistently drawn strong demand, with more than one million tickets sold during last year’s promotion alone.

We all want to see cheaper rail travel, so whether you’re planning a half-term getaway, or visiting friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions.
Heidi Alexander, Transport Secretary

Examples of discounted journeys during the Rail Sale

  • £10 fares between Portsmouth and London Waterloo, a 59% reduction
  • £1.20 tickets between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport, down from £2.90
  • Reduced advance and off-peak fares on thousands of regional and intercity routes
  • Offers available across most operators during the January sales window

Lower fares during the sale period make short breaks and day trips easier to plan across England, Scotland and Wales. Better access to large cities supports visits to museums, theatres and business districts, while cheaper rail links to airports help simplify onward travel outside the UK. Lower ticket prices also make regional destinations easier to reach, especially for weekend trips where travelling by train replaces the need to drive.

The Rail Sale confirms that trains remain a practical way to travel around Britain. With fares frozen and discounted tickets released early in the year, trips for early 2026 can be planned with clearer expectations. Prices are fixed ahead of time rather than shifting closer to departure, giving passengers a defined period to buy lower-cost tickets and arrange travel without uncertainty.
