The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance aviation safety. The agency has initiated a request for information to explore advanced analytics through AI, aiming to better understand the factors contributing to safety events in the National Airspace System (NAS). This market research will help identify current capabilities and growth areas in aviation safety and gather industry feedback.

Currently, the FAA utilizes the Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) system, which integrates various connected and disconnected systems for information analysis and sharing with multiple stakeholders. The new initiative aims to expand insights from existing data sources, providing a more comprehensive understanding of high-risk operations and their environments.

The proposed AI-driven safety system will enhance predictive analytics to proactively identify and mitigate potential safety risks. By leveraging AI and machine learning, the FAA seeks to analyze safety data and derive actionable insights. Integrating various data sources will offer a holistic view of aviation safety factors, ultimately improving the overall safety of the NAS through advanced analytics and rapid risk response.

As outlined on SAM.GOV, the FAA's goals include:

  • Enhancing predictive analytics to identify and mitigate safety risks proactively.
  • Utilizing AI and machine learning for safety data analysis and actionable insights.
  • Integrating diverse data sources for a comprehensive safety view.
  • Improving NAS safety through advanced analytics and swift risk responses.

The integration of AI will face several challenges, including data sensitivity, variety, timing, and the overall integration process. Therefore, the FAA has requested interested vendors to demonstrate their capabilities, current solutions, potential modifications, and how they can manage sensitive data. Vendors must submit their applications electronically by 17:00 on July 2nd, 2024, to the Contracting Officer at SafetyDataChallenge@faa.gov. Selected vendors may have the opportunity for one-on-one discussions with the FAA.
