In recent weeks, nearly two dozen Southwest Airlines flight attendants have sustained injuries due to exploding soda cans during flights. This unexpected issue has raised safety concerns among the airline crew and passengers.

Southwest Airlines has acknowledged the problem and is actively seeking solutions. The incidents are believed to be linked to how beverages are catered and handled on the flights.

The airline, known for its complimentary beverage and snack service, faces a unique challenge due to the extreme temperatures that the soda cans are exposed to before being loaded onto aircraft. Unlike other airlines, Southwest does not use refrigerated vehicles for catering, leading to increased pressure inside the cans, causing them to explode when opened.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the injuries have been significant enough to prompt an investigation. Southwest Airlines has been proactive in addressing the issue, directing ground personnel to measure the temperature of soda cans and advising flight attendants to avoid opening any deformed or dented cans. Additionally, the airline is testing air-conditioned catering trucks at key airports like Las Vegas.

The extreme summer heat in cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix, where Southwest has a significant presence, has exacerbated the problem. Las Vegas, for instance, recorded an all-time high temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit earlier in July, intensifying the issue.

A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines emphasized the company's commitment to the safety of both employees and customers. The airline is implementing various measures to mitigate heat-related hazards and ensure safe beverage handling practices.

Southwest's reputation for customer-friendly policies such as free checked bags and unassigned seating remains intact. However, the recent soda can incidents highlight the need for continuous improvements in catering and safety protocols, particularly in the face of rising global temperatures.

As the airline continues to address this issue, passengers and crew members can expect enhanced safety measures and improved beverage handling procedures on future flights.
