The European Union’s Entry/Exit System has been in place since 12 October 2025 and is being rolled out in stages at external Schengen borders. It replaces passport stamps with a digital record of entries and exits for non-EU nationals. Travellers entering or leaving the Schengen area may now encounter biometric checks, including facial image capture, as part of routine border control procedures.

Alongside the system, the EU has launched the Travel to Europe mobile app for travellers who fall under EES registration. The app lets users submit passport details and a facial image before reaching the border. Checks still take place in person, while submitting details beforehand helps cut down queues at busy border points.

The app can be used by non-EU nationals holding a biometric passport and travelling to a country where EES is active. Data can be submitted within 72 hours before arrival or departure. At present, Sweden is the first country to support the app, with other participating states expected to follow as EES implementation continues across Europe.

How the Travel to Europe app works

  • Download the app via App Store or Google Play
  • Select your destination country and border crossing
  • Scan your passport data page and chip
  • Take a facial image and answer entry questions
  • Submit the journey and await confirmation

As EES coverage expands, trips to countries using the system are likely to feel more predictable at the border. Preparing details in advance supports smoother access to destinations such as Stockholm and onward travel across the Schengen area. Cultural capitals, business centres and seasonal tourist regions may all benefit from reduced queues as digital checks replace manual passport stamping.

The change shows how Europe now handles short-stay arrivals. Border checks follow clearer procedures and place more weight on preparation before travel, instead of relying only on checks at arrival points. Anyone heading into the Schengen area needs to know where these systems apply and how they work, especially when travelling during busy periods.
