Essex and Suffolk Face Three Weekends of Rail Disruption
Weekend train journeys across Essex and Suffolk will be disrupted in November as GBR Anglia replaces sections of railway with buses during engineering work. The changes affect journeys towards London as well as local branches, with different routes closing on different dates. Some trains will still run for part of the journey, so a familiar departure time may now involve a coach and an unfamiliar connection.
Where Trains Will Be Replaced by Buses
- 14–15 Nov: Sudbury–Marks Tey; Sunday also Ipswich–Colchester and Manningtree–Harwich Town.
- 21–22 Nov: Sudbury–Marks Tey and Braintree–Witham; Sunday adds Colchester–Ingatestone (London journeys) and Colchester–Chelmsford (local journeys).
- 28–29 Nov: Ingatestone/Southend Victoria–Newbury Park and Southminster–Wickford; tickets accepted on the Central line to Stratford/Liverpool Street.
- Bures: Station and car park closed from 21 November until 04:00 on 23 November.
- Before travelling: Check your date on Greater Anglia’s service alterations calendar.
The closure pattern matters most on Sundays. On 15 November, trains continue between Norwich and Ipswich and between Colchester and London Liverpool Street, but the section between them is by bus. On 22 November, trains still run either side of the Colchester closure; passengers heading to London must change between bus and train. The journey planner should show each replacement leg before tickets are bought.
On 28–29 November, London-bound passengers may need a replacement bus to Newbury Park, followed by the Central line towards Stratford or Liverpool Street. Greater Anglia tickets cover the replacement bus without extra charge and are accepted for that Underground section. Contactless pay-as-you-go won't work for the bus, so buy a paper ticket or eTicket beforehand. Bus stops can be away from station entrances.
Travelling with a full-size bike or a pet could rule out the replacement bus altogether: Greater Anglia allows neither, except assistance dogs; non-electric folding bikes are permitted, subject to space. Its accessible travel team can arrange help, including taxis when needed. If a replacement bus runs at least 15 minutes late en route, Delay Repay may apply. Those with appointments or onward trains should allow for longer journeys.
