A Tiny Sail-Powered Ferry Is Testing an England–France Route
SailLink is preparing a one-week trial of wind-powered passenger crossings between Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex and Fécamp in Normandy this September. The pilot will use a high-speed sailing catamaran rather than a conventional ferry, carrying a small number of foot passengers and bicycles. If the trial proves successful, the company says the route could become a permanent second cross-Channel service alongside its existing Dover–Boulogne operation.

The 18-metre catamaran is designed for fast sailing and uses recycled parts from ocean-racing boats, including the mast and rudders from a former IMOCA 60. SailLink says nearly 70% of its Dover–Boulogne crossings last year were completed under sail alone, with engines used mainly when winds were light or while entering and leaving harbour. Passport checks for the September trial will be handled dockside.
The route could be especially useful for cyclists and walkers because both ports connect directly with established long-distance routes. Shoreham links with National Cycle Route 2 and the Downs Link, while Fécamp connects with La Vélomaritime, part of EuroVelo 4, and the GR21 coastal path. Fécamp also opens access to Normandy’s Alabaster Coast, while Shoreham sits within easy reach of Brighton and the South Downs.
This is not a replacement for a large car ferry: capacity is tiny, journeys depend on the weather and the crossing is expected to take much longer than a conventional fast ferry. Its appeal is different. Travellers who prefer slower, low-impact journeys can cross directly between two town-centre marinas, take a bicycle aboard and make the sea journey part of the trip rather than simply a transfer.
