Where in the world do you get the best healthcare: International Living ranking
The westernmost and warmest. We are talking about Portugal. We know that it has beautiful beaches, sunny weather all year round, delicious cuisine, and a fascinating history. However, this country is ideal not only for vacation, but also for living or emigration. And one of the reasons is high-quality and affordable medical services for everyone who lives here.
That is why Portugal is popular among the elderly, as they choose it for retirement. This is reported by Travel + Leisure with reference to International Living.
According to International Living's latest annual global retirement index for 2024, Portugal was ranked second in the healthcare category.
"In Portugal, the cost of health insurance is much lower than in the United States, although by all accounts it is as good or better," said Jennifer Stevens, executive editor of International Living, Travel + Leisure. She explained that a visit to a family doctor usually costs about $55, and a visit to a subspecialist costs $100. Moreover, many doctors speak English, so there will be no language barrier.
The country has some of the best higher education institutions in Europe. For example, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Coimbra and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the New University of Lisbon. And nine hospitals have the gold seal of approval from the Joint Commission International, a nonprofit organization headquartered in the United States that accredits tens of thousands of medical programs and institutions around the world.
