Two Japanese tourists died near a popular tourist spot in the United States, which gained fame thanks to TikTok
Two Japanese citizens have died after falling into the water at a perilous swimming spot popularized by TikTok. The bodies of 21-year-old Hiroya Konosu and 34-year-old Takayuki Suzuki were discovered on Sunday after they went underwater while swimming near Eagle Falls in Washington state.
According to the Daily Herald, the men were part of a group of four who were vacationing near the picturesque waterfall. It took several days to identify them.
According to Sky Valley Fire Chief Eric Andrews, Eagle Falls, which gained popularity through viral TikTok videos in 2020, has become a "hot spot" for tragic accidents.
The waterfall features a series of rapids where glacier-fed water flows into narrow chutes between rocks. Every year, vacationers drown or require rescue in these perilous areas.
Andrews noted that although the waterfall's popularity on TikTok has somewhat waned, it remains an alluring destination for tourists who sometimes disregard safety guidelines.
Rescue services urge people to admire the waterfall from a distance without risking their lives near the water.
As TravelWise previously reported, a hot air balloon with people in the basket crashed in the desert in Eloy, Arizona. The incident led to the death of 4 people.
