Tourists should be careful: Every tenth house in France is infested with bed bugs
One in ten homes in France is infested with bed bugs. Travellers should be aware of this fact when choosing holiday accommodation and be very careful.
This is evidenced by a study conducted by the National Agency for Food, Environment and Health (ANSES). It showed that the tourism industry is largely to blame for the surge in infections, The Telegraph reports.
"This phenomenon is completely independent of the social environment," said Carine Fiore, deputy director of the ANSES Social, Economic and Social Sciences Division.
"Although all homes can be affected by bedbugs, we have been able to identify several factors that contribute to infestation, such as travelling or living in shared accommodation," she said.
The reason for this sike is increased international travel and the bugs' resistance to insecticides, the report says. Another common way bed bugs enter people's homes is through old furniture.
