Storm Benjamin, named by France’s national weather service, crossed the English Channel earlier this week before continuing east toward mainland Europe. The UK didn't get hit by the worst of the storm, but people traveling in parts of England still had to deal with power outages, ferry cancellations, and train delays. The Met Office has now lowered its warnings to two yellow alerts: one for rain in Norfolk and Suffolk and one for strong winds along the east coast. This means that travel conditions are getting better but are still not safe.

This easing weather brings a gradual return to normal schedules but not complete calm. Earlier gusts reached 55 mph in coastal areas and heavy downpours caused minor flooding on rural roads. Although rail and air services have resumed, passengers are advised to double-check departure boards and traffic updates before leaving. Ferry travellers crossing the North Sea may still face occasional delays due to residual rough seas.

Across the Channel, parts of northern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands continue to face unsettled conditions. Regional officials have released safety notices, prompting several transport providers to modify their timetables as a precaution. Travellers planning trips to these areas should stay informed through official channels and allow extra time for connections, particularly in regions along the Atlantic and North Sea coasts where strong winds and intermittent rain are expected to continue through Thursday evening.

Even as skies begin to clear, residual rainfall in eastern England could still cause water buildup and brief road closures. Visitors heading to Norfolk, Suffolk, or seaside towns should monitor local travel advisories and remain cautious on wet or flooded roads. Carrying waterproof clothing, keeping accommodation details accessible, and limiting travel during periods of high winds are practical ways to reduce risks and travel disruptions.

The movement of Storm Benjamin across Western Europe highlights how quickly autumn weather can change and how important it remains to be prepared for those on the road. Most routes in the UK are returning to normal, but travelers should still be prepared for changeable conditions. In the event of unpredictable seasonal storms, flexibility in travel plans, monitoring weather forecasts, and checking for updates before departure can be crucial.
