London Stansted Airport is preparing for disruption over the early May bank holiday weekend as around 100 workers are set to strike between 3 and 6 May. The airport, one of the busiest in the UK, is expected to see delays during a period that usually brings a high number of passengers travelling for short breaks and holidays.

The planned walkout involves staff responsible for assisting passengers with reduced mobility, including helping them through the airport and onto aircraft. The action follows a rejected pay offer described by union representatives as below expectations. As a result, boarding processes may take longer, particularly for those who rely on additional support when travelling.

“Workers at ABM are increasingly given bigger workloads and deserve pay that reflects this."
Steve Edwards, Unite regional officer

Last year, Stansted handled around 2.74 million passengers across May, with heavy traffic during both bank holiday weekends. The airport serves a wide range of European routes, with airlines such as Ryanair operating flights to destinations including Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Alicante and Ibiza. With high demand expected again this year, the timing of the strike could affect a large number of journeys.

Passengers travelling through Stansted during this period will spend longer at the airport, especially those who need assistance. Boarding takes more time in these cases and this can delay flights, including for other passengers. People end up waiting in line at check-in and at the gates during busy hours.

Staff shortages during busy travel periods can slow down airport operations. Flights are still expected to run, but boarding and assistance services may take longer, especially at peak times. People travelling over the bank holiday weekend should allow extra time at the airport and check for any changes before leaving, as delays are likely when passing through Stansted.
