Portugal’s Quiet Beach Tops Europe’s 2026 List

Praia de Monte Clérigo, on Portugal’s Costa Vicentina, has been named Europe’s best beach for 2026 by European Best Destinations. The annual ranking looks at beaches across the continent before a 30-strong shortlist is put to an international panel of travellers. Natural beauty, access, beach services and atmosphere are among the factors considered in the final vote this year.
Monte Clérigo was chosen for its quieter setting, natural scenery and appeal away from Portugal’s busier resort strips. The beach sits within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, giving visitors access to coastal walking routes as well as sand and sea. European Best Destinations also noted that accommodation in the area can be up to three times cheaper than better-known Portuguese spots.
Greece also stood out in the ranking, taking three of the first four places after Portugal’s win. The next highest-ranked beaches show how strongly southern Europe shaped this year’s list:
- 2nd: Voutoumi Beach, Antipaxos, Greece, also named Europe’s most beautiful beach
- 3rd: Fteri Beach, Kefalonia, Greece
- 4th: Elafonisi Beach, Crete, Greece
- 5th: Bogliasco Beach, near Genoa, Italy
- 6th: Cala Mesquida, Mallorca, Spain
- 7th: Kvalvika Beach, Lofoten, Norway
The ranking could push more visitors towards Portugal’s wilder south-west coast, especially those looking beyond the Algarve’s busiest names. Monte Clérigo gives access to Atlantic scenery, hiking in the natural park and quieter beach days with fewer resort crowds. Nearby stays may also suit travellers watching costs, while Greece’s high ranking keeps the Ionian islands and Crete firmly on beach-holiday maps.
The result is a useful reminder that Europe’s best beach breaks are not always the loudest or most heavily developed. Monte Clérigo’s win points towards a growing taste for places with space, nature and simpler coastal stays. Anyone planning a summer trip may now find better value by checking smaller beach towns before booking the obvious resort favourites.
