Nuremberg Airport has officially opened its modernised passenger security checkpoint, bringing CT scanners into use at Albrecht Dürer Airport. The upgraded area was launched after several months of refurbishment. The opening was attended by regional and city officials, including Bavarian transport minister Christian Bernreiter, Middle Franconia district president Dr Kerstin Engelhardt-Blum and airport COO Jan C. Bruns.

What Changes at Security with the new CT technology in place:

  • Liquids, gels and electronics can stay in hand luggage
  • The 100ml liquid limit no longer applies
  • Leak-proof containers of up to 2 litres are allowed
  • Transparent 1-litre plastic bags are no longer required
  • Takeaway coffee cups and similar non-spill-proof containers will be rejected

The airport says there is no upper limit on the number of liquids and gels passengers may take through security, although airline hand luggage rules still apply. Smartphones, tablets and laptops can also remain inside bags during screening. The change should make preparation at the checkpoint less fiddly, especially for people travelling with work devices, toiletries or family items.

The updated checkpoint also has several storage areas at each screening lane, giving passengers more space to place jackets, bags and other belongings on the conveyor belts. This should allow people who need extra time to move at their own pace, while others continue through the process. The airport says this layout is intended to reduce waiting times.

The change should make Nuremberg more convenient for short trips, business travel and family holidays, with less unpacking before security. Passengers heading through the airport can keep more items in their bags and move towards the gate with fewer small rules to juggle. The main thing to remember: liquids are easier now, but containers still need to be leak-proof.
