Since 2014, the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks display in London has required tickets for entry, limiting the number of spectators and ensuring crowd safety. Prior to ticketing, up to half a million people would flock to Central London, raising significant safety concerns. Now, with a restricted number of tickets, visitors from around the world are eager to grab one of the limited spots to witness this grand spectacle.

Tourist Levy: Additional Costs for Visitors

This year, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has introduced a new charge for non-Londoners, a tourist levy. Visitors from other parts of the UK or from abroad will need to pay an additional £15 on top of the regular ticket price. This is in response to the significant costs involved in staging the event, which last year exceeded £4 million, while ticket sales contributed only around £1 million. The extra charge aims to offset these costs while maintaining the quality and safety of the celebration.

Pricing Based on Viewing Areas

Ticket prices vary depending on the location of the viewing areas. Prime spots like Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, and the Victoria Embankment offer some of the best views of the fireworks, but come with a higher price tag: £35 for London residents and £50 for visitors. These areas provide a spectacular view of the London Eye, where the fireworks are launched.

Why Are Ticket Prices Increasing?

The cost increase is mainly due to enhanced security measures and crowd management efforts required to host such a large-scale event. Despite the financial challenges, the fireworks display remains a key moment for showcasing London to both domestic and international audiences. According to the mayor, the event is not just a celebration, but also a platform to highlight London’s global appeal.

How to Get Tickets

Tickets for the event go on sale starting Friday, 18th October at midday. Due to high demand, tickets typically sell out quickly, so it’s recommended to mark the date and be prepared to purchase them as soon as they become available. Those who are unable to secure tickets still have numerous other New Year’s Eve events to choose from across the city.
