Italy Adds Late-Night Hours at Top Attractions
Italy is extending opening hours at three major cultural sites in Rome and Milan throughout August, giving visitors more time to enter later in the day when temperatures are lower. The joint initiative by the culture and tourism ministries and Milan city authorities covers the Colosseum, Pantheon and Sforza Castle. Launched on 1 August, it is designed to improve visitor flows and make sightseeing easier during cooler hours.
When the Attractions Stay Open Later
- Colosseum: Fridays and Saturdays, 7.45pm–11.30pm
- Pantheon: 7pm–11pm daily except Thursdays; full admission €7, reduced €2
- Sforza Castle: Extended until 7.30pm, with reduced admission for selected museum areas
- Free exhibition: Passione Disegno also stays open later
- Duration: Throughout August 2026
The programme is being tested for August rather than introduced as a permanent change. Officials say it follows discussions with tour guides and tourism professionals about how visitors use major cultural sites during summer. Milan’s Sforza Castle is also offering reduced admission during the extended period for the Museum of Ancient Art and Michelangelo’s Rondanini Pietà, while the free Passione Disegno exhibition is staying open later too.
Later access gives visitors more flexibility to build sightseeing around the hottest part of the day. In Rome, the Colosseum and Pantheon can be left until evening, freeing daytime hours for shorter outdoor walks or indoor stops. In Milan, the extra opening period at Sforza Castle gives visitors more time to see the Rondanini Pietà and the castle’s collections without squeezing them into an afternoon itinerary.
The extended hours do not remove the need to plan around Italy’s summer heat, but they make it easier to avoid the most uncomfortable part of the day at three heavily visited sites. The change is limited to August, so travellers should check the individual attractions before going, especially for Thursday restrictions at the Pantheon and evening access arrangements at the Colosseum.
