Asiana Airlines has issued updated safety guidance covering power banks and electronic cigarettes in carry-on bags. The airline states that using or charging these devices on board is not allowed, and requests that they are kept with the passenger or placed in the seat pocket rather than in overhead bins. The notice also reminds passengers that batteries must be shielded against short circuits and handled carefully to avoid damage.

The airline asks passengers to tell cabin crew straight away if a battery becomes hot or starts to swell. The rules sit alongside a broader push in aviation to deal with lithium battery risks after past incidents with portable chargers and vaping devices. Asiana also notes that batteries should be protected from impact and that exposed terminals need to be covered or packed so they cannot touch metal objects.

A new rule comes into force on 26 January 2026, banning the use of power banks for charging phones, tablets and other devices during flight on all domestic and international routes. Passengers who need to top up devices are advised to use in-seat power, where fitted. The airline notes that charging ports vary by aircraft type and may not be available on all seats, depending on the configuration.

Routes between Seoul and major European cities tend to run long enough for people to rely on their phones, tablets and laptops. Asiana flies to airports such as London Heathrow, Frankfurt and Rome, which give quick access to galleries, historic sites, shopping areas and well-known neighbourhoods soon after landing. Having power at the seat helps people get things done or check plans without depending on portable chargers.

As winter travel picks up, Asiana’s notice serves as a reminder that airline rules for lithium batteries continue to evolve. Portable chargers have become everyday items, yet they remain one of the most scrutinised pieces of cabin baggage. Travellers booking after 26 January will need to plan device usage more carefully, check aircraft layouts for power outlets and keep power banks protected and within reach during the flight.
