The rail industry is gearing up for a gender-focused event to recognize and celebrate the key role of women in shaping the future of rail transportation. With women constituting more than half of rail passengers, but only about 20% of the railway workforce in the EU, efforts to address this gender gap are gaining traction.

In a collaborative effort to promote fairness, diversity, and equality, several prominent organizations, including the European Commission and Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking, have joined forces to launch the Women in Rail Award 2024. This initiative aims to draw attention to outstanding women and their contributions to the railway sector, while also advocating for greater gender balance in the field.

Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission, expressed enthusiasm for the award, highlighting its role in promoting diversity and inclusivity. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 25, 2024, in Berlin, serving as a platform to honor the achievements of women who are driving positive change in the railway industry.

The award for advancing women's rights and opportunities recognizes European companies that prioritize gender balance and integrate it into their organizational culture and decision-making processes. The leadership and mentoring award acknowledges women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and mentoring, empowering others to make a positive impact in the European railway sector. The research and innovation award celebrates women who have made significant contributions to research and innovation, enhancing the competitiveness and attractiveness of rail transportation.

Candidates from various professions, including organizations, companies, and individuals from the EU, are invited to apply. Projects or initiatives should have been ongoing for at least one year and contribute to achieving gender equality and expanding women's rights and opportunities. Interested candidates can submit their applications for one of the three award categories by completing the EU Survey form before May 31, 2024. A jury, comprising representatives from the organizers, will evaluate the applications and select the deserving recipients.
