Wizz Air to Wind Down Vienna Base
Wizz Air has announced the gradual closure of its Vienna base after a strategic review of its operations and fleet deployment. The process will begin on 26 October 2025, with two Airbus A321neo aircraft withdrawn and routes to Bilbao and London Gatwick suspended. The remaining three aircraft and all other Vienna routes will cease operations on 15 March 2026.
The airline opened its Vienna base in 2018 and currently operates five Airbus A321neo aircraft, serving 28 routes to 20 countries. Over the years, rising airport costs and taxes in Vienna have made operations increasingly challenging. Wizz Air has chosen to concentrate on its core markets in Central and Eastern Europe, where its low-fare model remains more sustainable.
Wizz Air has stated it will assist employees affected by the closure, providing relocation options to other bases and offering alternative roles where available. The airline also emphasised that passengers will be kept informed. Those with bookings after the closure dates will be contacted directly and given the choice of rebooking their flights or receiving a full refund in WIZZ credits.
Bratislava and Budapest bases will now become the main gateways for low-cost Wizz Air flights. Bratislava is less than an hour from Vienna, providing an easy alternative for Austrian travellers. Budapest continues to grow as a major hub, with an expanding list of routes connecting Central Europe to key holiday and business destinations.
This marks the close of an important chapter for Wizz Air in Austria and reflects its shift towards a more sustainable network strategy. By moving resources to markets where operations are more efficient, the airline plans to keep its strong presence in Central Europe and continue offering passengers budget-friendly flights from Bratislava, Budapest, and other nearby airports.
