The popular Spanish resort will introduce water restrictions due to abnormal drought

Amid deteriorating weather conditions and drought in the Canary Islands, authorities in Tenerife are taking measures to preserve water resources. This may be concerning news not only for locals but also for tourists, as several bans directly impact the filling of hotel pools and showers on the beaches.

Some cities in Tenerife, including Fasnia, have already imposed restrictions on water usage. According to Express, other cities may also be affected in the near future.

The new regulations prohibit the use of drinking water for:

• Irrigation
• Filling swimming pools, ponds, reservoirs, or tanks
• Washing facades
• Washing cars (except at gas stations)
• Using showers on the beaches within the municipality.

Fasnia Mayor Luis Javier González Delgado explained, "These are measures that the government group is taking from a position of responsibility. This is not an issue related to good or bad governance but to the worsening of the abnormal meteorological situation."

The water shortage in Tenerife has been exacerbated by the unfavorable weather conditions prevailing in the region for several years. The situation is worsening due to the dry autumn and winter.

Authorities in Fasnia are urging residents to conserve water to ensure its availability for drinking purposes. A water emergency declaration is expected to be announced in Tenerife soon.

As of last week, the island's reservoirs were only 39% full, well below the normal level of 70%.
