The Path of Love in Cinque Terre Reopens After 12 Years

One of Italy's most romantic routes, the Via dell'Amore (Path of Love), is reopening to visitors after 12 years of closure. The trail was closed in September 2012 following a landslide that injured four Australian tourists, necessitating significant renovations and increased safety measures.

The 800-meter path, carved into steep cliffs with breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea, has a history spanning over a century. It connects two medieval towns, Riomaggiore and Manarola, often referred to as "vertical" villages due to their placement on rocky outcrops and their colorful houses seemingly clinging to each other.

Previously, the Path of Love was one of the most popular sections of the 130 km network of trails in Cinque Terre. Despite its popularity, the Path of Love was not originally intended as a tourist route. It was created in the late 19th century for workers building the railway between Genoa and La Spezia. The trail was used to transport materials and explosives for tunnel construction.

With the resurgence of tourism in the 1950s, agriculture in the region began to decline, and the walls supporting the terraces started to deteriorate. Climate change also contributed to heavier rains and landslides, making the area even more dangerous. However, the unique landscape of Cinque Terre, shaped by generations of local residents, continues to attract tourists from around the world.

The Path of Love will be accessible again starting July 27. Authorities have set a limit on the number of visitors — no more than 400 people per hour — to prevent overcrowding. Tickets can be purchased online or at the park's ticket booths.

Additionally, small wedding ceremonies will be allowed on the trail, although full weddings with receptions will only be possible after the opening of the amphitheater, planned for next year. This new policy aims to fulfill the wishes of many couples dreaming of exchanging vows in such a romantic setting.

Cinque Terre is not just a tourist attraction but an example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The restoration and reopening of the Path of Love highlight the importance of preserving historical and natural values and the ongoing commitment to ensuring safety for all visitors.
