Snälltåget has launched a direct daytime train between Malmö and Oslo, giving Sweden and Norway a 600km rail link via Gothenburg. The service began on 15 June 2026 and follows Sweden’s west coast before crossing the border into Norway. The route is aimed at travellers who want a city-to-city journey with coastal, lake and river scenery on the way.

Tickets can cost as little as SEK 149, about £11.70, for a one-way journey, with fares varying by travel date and booking conditions. Snälltåget says timetable details are preliminary and may change because of track maintenance. The ticket includes two pieces of hand luggage and one smaller personal item, while non-folding bicycles are not accepted on board during the trip.

Timetable and Booking Details

  • Malmö C departure: 06:38; Oslo S arrival: 13:16
  • Sunday Malmö departure: 07:05
  • Oslo S departure: 14:48; Malmö C arrival: 21:25
  • Main stops: Lund, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Varberg, Trollhättan, Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad
  • Food: reserve Krogen when buying tickets

Check the live booking page before paying, especially if you need onward connections or meal reservations.

The Malmö–Oslo route puts more of western Sweden within one easy rail day, with several scenic stops beyond the main city pair. Lund Cathedral, Varberg Fortress, Apelviken Bay, Gothenburg, Trollhättan and Lake Vänern sit on or near the line, while Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg become simpler stops for Norway-bound visitors. In Malmö, passengers can also connect with Snälltåget’s Berlin night train via Copenhagen and Hamburg.

The route works best for rail-first trips, weekend breaks and travellers who prefer daylight journeys over airport transfers. The early Malmö departure gives a full afternoon in Oslo, while the return schedule suits a same-day departure after lunch. Anyone linking the train with hotels, ferries or the Berlin night service should leave buffer time and recheck times before departure, not at the platform.
