Travellers exploring the northern Highlands of Scotland now have improved access to key destinations following the expansion of the X99 bus route. Operating between Scrabster Ferry Gangway and Inverness via Thurso and Wick, the route now runs three times a day from Monday to Saturday and twice on Sundays. This update offers more flexibility for visitors planning to move across one of the UK’s most remote yet scenic regions.

The route has become a valuable asset for those wishing to experience the Highlands without the need for a private car. The X99 covers the distance from Thurso to Inverness in just over three and a half hours, making it a fast and convenient choice for public transport between the two towns. For travellers aiming to explore natural and cultural attractions along the way, this schedule allows for convenient day trips and easier overnight planning.

For independent travellers, especially those from abroad or those preferring eco-friendly transport options, the route expansion enhances accessibility to northern Scotland’s quieter corners. Using tools like live bus tracking and trip planners helps travellers feel more confident about their journey, especially in areas where transport choices are limited.

Among the highlights along the route are Dunrobin Castle, Brora Beach, and the town of Dornoch, along with a number of smaller villages full of history and scenic coastal charm. The X99 also supports connections to Orkney through the Scrabster ferry terminal, making it easier for visitors to combine mainland and island travel in a single itinerary. The schedule matches up with other local transport options, making it easier for travellers to get around if they're unfamiliar with the area.

This update is another step toward making travel in Scotland more eco-friendly and easier for everyone to access. By improving public transit in the Highlands, authorities aim not only to support local communities but also to encourage a broader audience to discover the region’s landscapes, heritage sites, and coastal attractions with greater ease.
