Newquay Airport Warns of Boardmasters Traffic Delays
Cornwall Airport Newquay has advised passengers to allow extra time for journeys between 5 and 10 August as Boardmasters brings heavy traffic to the area. The airport sits close to the festival site at Watergate Bay, where temporary road controls are expected to slow access. Travellers flying during the warning period should review the festival traffic plan before leaving and avoid relying on their usual journey time.
When Newquay Roads Will Be Busiest

The traffic plan is designed to keep festival vehicles moving during peak arrival and departure periods while maintaining access for residents and customers of local businesses. Traffic marshals will direct permitted vehicles through controlled sections. Cornwall Council also expects congestion to delay numerous bus services across Newquay, so public transport users may face longer journeys even when their usual route has not been formally diverted.
The disruption will also affect visitors heading to Newquay rather than the airport. Boardmasters uses Watergate Bay for its main festival site and Fistral Beach for surfing events, placing traffic close to beaches, hotels and local attractions. Porth and Whipsiderry are among the stops losing their usual bus link, while journeys into central Newquay may take longer throughout the festival period.
Passengers should work backwards from the airline’s check-in deadline and add a generous road buffer, particularly on Wednesday, Friday and Monday. Checking the flight status alone is not enough because the main risk is reaching the terminal late. Drivers should follow the published traffic route instead of a sat-nav shortcut, while bus users should confirm their departure stop and allow time for congestion before setting out.
