New Direct Air Connections Open Between Malaysia and Pontianak
AirAsia (AK) now provides direct flights again linking Pontianak in Indonesia with Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur and Kuching. These flights provide travelers with a quicker option compared to the six- to eight-hour overland journey that was previously needed between Kuching and Pontianak. This route launch marks the reopening of Pontianak’s Supadio Airport to international flights following its reinstatement in June 2025. By reinstating these routes, cross-border travel is strengthened, giving passengers improved opportunities for both business and leisure trips.
Inaugural flights were observed with formal receptions held at all arrival points. Key events included:
- Kuching: cultural performances and attendance by the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak and the CEO of the Sarawak Tourism Board.
- Kuala Lumpur: the guests were greeted upon arrival by Tourism Malaysia officials together with AirAsia management.
- Pontianak: the reception was hosted by Angkasa Pura Indonesia and provincial officials, including the Governor of West Kalimantan and the Malaysian Consul.
These ceremonies highlighted the significance of the restored international connections and the collaborative efforts between both countries.
The restored routes provide travelers with easier access to notable attractions in Sarawak. Visitors have the opportunity to explore Bako National Park with its forest trails and wildlife, enjoy coastal recreation and nature observation at Santubong Beach, and visit Gunung Gading National Park, home to the rare Rafflesia flowers and scenic hiking routes. The reduced travel time of under an hour enables visitors to plan trips that include multiple sites, improving their ability to enjoy the state’s natural and outdoor attractions.
Similarly, visitors from Malaysia can now reach major sites in West Kalimantan with greater convenience. Visitors to Pontianak can take walks along the Kapuas Riverside and browse local markets, enjoy outdoor leisure and cultural activities at Taman Alun Kapuas park, and visit the Equator Monument, which identifies the city’s position on the equator. The availability of direct flights makes it easier for visitors to plan brief trips and day excursions to these sites, avoiding long overland journeys and enabling them to experience cultural and natural attractions efficiently.
The new AirAsia services enhance regional travel by reducing journey times and improving access to notable sites. Passengers benefit from faster connections, easier planning, and the ability to experience multiple destinations efficiently. The restored flights support travel between Malaysia and Indonesia by providing practical and convenient options for cross-border trips, while also contributing to the growth of tourism, business, and cultural exchanges throughout the region.
