Wolf Sightings Prompt Tourist Advice in Denmark
Danish authorities have issued wolf encounter advice for tourists around Oksbøl, Vejers and Blåvand after young animals were seen close to people, dogs and summer cottages. Varde municipality and Visit Vesterhavet have placed multilingual flyers in tourist offices, campsites and holiday areas. The campaign responds to concern about a young wolf showing less natural fear of humans than expected, rather than to any recorded attack.
Wolf Encounter Advice for Visitors
- Stay calm: Remain still if a wolf comes within 30 metres
- Eye contact: Face the animal and do not turn your back
- Make noise: Shout, clap or wave if it does not leave
- Do not: Run or follow the wolf
- Close encounter: Step back slowly while watching it
- Dogs and children: Leash dogs; children under ten need an adult in the Oksbøl area
- Attack: Fight back; do not play dead
- Report sightings: Use Ulveatlas
The warning does not indicate an immediate threat. No wolf attacks on people have been recorded in Denmark, and the latest official review found that the young male seen near Oksbøl was not actively seeking contact with humans. Its earlier bold behaviour may be fading, but visitors are still being asked to keep their distance, supervise children and keep dogs on a lead.
The guidance does not close trails, beaches, holiday parks or nature areas around Oksbøl, Vejers and Blåvand. Visitors can still use west Jutland’s beaches, dune landscapes, forests and cycling routes or visit Blåvandshuk Lighthouse and the Tirpitz Museum. The difference is that walks now require more awareness, especially with children or dogs, and food should never be left where it might attract wildlife.
Most visitors will never see a wolf, and Danish authorities say the risk of an attack remains very low. A sighting is not an invitation to move closer for a better photograph. Keep your distance, control the dog, gather children and avoid blocking the animal’s escape. Save Ulveatlas before heading out so unusual behaviour can be reported with a location and image, if safely available.
