Madrid Named Europe’s Top Sustainable Tourism Destination

A recent study reveals the Spanish capital outperforms eight major European cities in sustainable tourism practices.

As destinations worldwide strive for more sustainable tourism, one European city stands out. According to a study by The Data Appeal Co, Madrid leads the pack among nine major European cities, including Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Rome, Dublin, London, Copenhagen, and Berlin.

The analysis, based on the European Commission’s ‘European Tourism Indicator System’, highlights Madrid's comprehensive approach to sustainability, scoring an average of 77 out of 100 across four key pillars.

Madrid excelled in destination management with 91 points (with Vienna leading), socio-cultural aspects with 78 points (Rome leading), and addressing overtourism with 74 points (just behind Paris).

The evaluation considered various factors such as the cultural environment, green urban areas, quality of public transport, inclusiveness for the LGBTQ+ community, and initiatives to reduce pollution, including Madrid's renewal of bus fleets.
