KLM to Bring Free Starlink Wi-Fi to Long-Haul Flights
KLM will introduce free high-speed Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights from mid-2027, extending the service already available on much of its European network. The airline has chosen Starlink for the long-haul upgrade, with internet access planned in every cabin class. The rollout will happen gradually, so passengers should not expect every KLM intercontinental aircraft to offer the service immediately.
What KLM’s New Wi-Fi Will Include
- Start: mid-2027
- Flights: KLM intercontinental services
- Cabins: all travel classes
- Provider: Starlink
- Cost: free for Flying Blue members
- Access: log in or register through the onboard portal
- Rollout: phased across equipped aircraft
- Use: browsing, email, streaming, gaming and video calls
The change should remove one extra cost on equipped long-haul flights. Flying Blue members currently receive only a free Message Pass on intercontinental services, limited to text messages, while browsing, email, streaming and other internet use require a paid Wi-Fi Pass. Once Starlink is installed, members will be able to use the full service without buying that separate pass.
Starlink uses low-Earth-orbit satellites and is designed to provide connectivity over oceans and remote areas as well as land. That matters most on long intercontinental journeys, where conventional inflight connections can be limited. On equipped aircraft, passengers will be able to stay online for much more than messaging, including browsing, streaming and other high-bandwidth use throughout the flight.
"We are making a long-standing wish of our passengers a reality: fast, free Wi-Fi on intercontinental flights starting in mid-2027. This will allow passengers to stay connected even high above the ocean. The introduction of free Wi-Fi is part of KLM’s continued efforts to provide its passengers with a comfortable, digitally connected travel experience."
KLM has not yet said which aircraft or routes will receive Starlink first, so a flight booked for mid-2027 will not automatically include the new service. Wi-Fi availability can already be checked during booking or in My Trip, although KLM has not confirmed how Starlink-equipped flights will be identified. Flying Blue membership will be required for free access, and registration can be completed onboard.
