Flydubai Axe Attack Leaves Tel Aviv Route Suspended

A flydubai co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe on flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on 30 September in what UAE prosecutors now call an attempted terrorist attack. The aircraft diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where all 172 passengers and crew were confirmed safe. Flydubai has since suspended Tel Aviv operations until further notice while the official investigation continues.
The attack happened in the cockpit while the Boeing 737 was over Saudi Arabia. UAE prosecutors say the co-pilot tried to seize control of the aircraft, which dropped about 16,625ft in just over 30 seconds. Passengers and crew subdued him, and a reserve flydubai pilot travelling on board took control and landed safely at Tabuk, where Saudi authorities detained the co-pilot.
The UAE prosecutor general said investigators had established that the co-pilot attempted a terrorist attack, but the motive and any possible links are still being examined. The suspect was later transferred to Abu Dhabi, and the UAE is leading the investigation. Flydubai says it cannot comment further while the inquiry continues and previously said the incident had no impact on other scheduled operations across its network.
