Travellers returning to Great Britain with vape liquid now face a new 50ml duty-free limit, introduced on 1 October 2026. The allowance covers e-liquid carried for personal use, whether or not it contains nicotine. Anyone bringing in more than 50ml must declare it and pay tax and duty on the full amount, while undeclared goods can be seized by Border Force.

The change sits alongside the new Vaping Products Duty, charged at £2.20 per 10ml. Crucially, the charge is not limited to the amount above the allowance: if you arrive with 100ml, tax and duty apply to all 100ml. Declarations can be made online up to 120 hours before arrival, or at the airport customs area using the red channel or red-point phone.

What to Check Before Reaching Customs

  • Where it applies: arrivals into England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Limit: 50ml per person aged 17 or over.
  • Start date: 1 October 2026.
  • If you exceed it: tax and duty apply to the full quantity; Vaping Products Duty is £2.20 per 10ml.
  • At the airport: use the red channel or red-point phone in the customs area if you have not declared online.
  • Before arrival: online declarations open 5 days, or 120 hours, before you reach the UK.
  • Check: GOV UK customs guidance before travelling.

Northern Ireland follows different rules, so travellers should not assume the 50ml Great Britain allowance applies everywhere in the UK. Arrivals from non-EU countries use the existing £390 allowance for other goods, while those coming from the EU must be carrying vaping products for personal use and may face extra checks above 200ml. Under-17s arriving in Great Britain have no vaping allowance and must declare any amount.

The main change for holidaymakers is that buying several bottles of e-liquid abroad can now create a customs bill on return, even when the products are only for personal use. Count the total liquid volume before flying home, including liquid inside pre-filled devices, and declare anything above the relevant allowance before reaching customs. Keep the online declaration receipt in case Border Force asks for proof.
