Luxembourg Airport was forced to halt all flights on Friday night after unauthorised drones were spotted near and over the airfield, sending 19 inbound services to alternative airports and disrupting more than 1,800 passengers. Operations have since resumed, but airlines are still repositioning aircraft and crews while authorities investigate who was behind the sightings and whether further disruption could follow.

What to Do if Your Flight Was Affected

  • Flight status: Confirm your flight with the airline before setting off for the airport.
  • Cancellation: Ask the airline about a refund or another flight before buying a replacement ticket yourself.
  • Alternative airport: Find out how you are getting back to Luxembourg before paying for a train, taxi or other transport.
  • Missed connection: If both flights are on one ticket, ask the airline what they can move you onto next.
  • Extra costs: Keep any receipts if you had to pay for food, a hotel or transport yourself.
  • New departure: Check where your replacement flight departs from and whether the airline will get you there.
  • Further updates: Follow both the airline and Luxembourg Airport for any later changes.

Of the 19 diverted flights, 17 were operated by Luxair, while a KLM service from Amsterdam and an Air Dolomiti flight from Frankfurt were also affected. Aircraft were sent to airports including Cologne/Bonn, Brussels, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liège, Paris, Basel and Strasbourg. Luxembourg Airport warned that delays could continue after reopening as airlines repositioned aircraft and crews and worked to restore normal schedules.

The Luxembourg government reconvened its interministerial drone assessment unit on Saturday to investigate the incident. Officials said the drones were unidentified and unauthorised, and that no definitive conclusion could yet be drawn about their origin or operators. Authorities are continuing checks with neighbouring countries. Earlier drone reports near Medernach are being examined separately, with no confirmed link to the airport closure announced so far.

Luxembourg Airport is open again, but passengers travelling this weekend should still check their flight directly with the airline because knock-on delays may continue. If a flight is cancelled, EU rules give customers a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, with meals or accommodation where applicable. Fixed compensation may not be due if the airline proves extraordinary circumstances caused the cancellation and that reasonable measures could not have prevented it.
