Over the next two weeks, more than 10,000 passengers from Manchester are expected to travel directly to Munich to attend the city’s renowned Oktoberfest, which runs from 20th September to 5th October. Having been celebrated for over two centuries, the event attracts international travelers seeking Bavarian culture, festive parades, music, and traditional foods. The central activities take place at Theresienwiese, a spacious fairground close to the Old Town, which hosts over 30 beer tents, cultural shows, rides, and additional attractions.

Manchester Airport is currently the only northern English airport offering direct flights to Munich, allowing travelers to reach the festival without layovers. Notable details about the services are as follows:

  • Airlines operating the route: Lufthansa and easyJet.
  • Lufthansa’s special offering: the chance to pre-order an ‘Oktoberfest Moment’ mealbox, accompanied by a complimentary drink like Munich beer or Paulaner.
  • Benefits of daily flights: handles the 25 percent rise in passenger numbers compared with typical periods, offers flexibility in travel planning, and helps travelers organize trips efficiently.
“We’re proud to connect the people of the North with the destinations they want to go to, and Munich is a popular city break destination year-round – but there's no better time to visit than during Oktoberfest, and clearly thousands of people agree!"
Stephen Turner, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airport

These direct services provide practical benefits, including quicker travel and less complicated planning. Passengers have the ability to plan journeys effectively, for either short visits or longer trips, while avoiding layovers. The arrangement makes it simpler for guests to attend important festival celebrations and explore Munich’s central landmarks, including the Old Town, Marienplatz, and the New Town Hall. Daily flight services provide passengers with the opportunity to combine attending the festival with sightseeing and spending time outdoors in the city.

The increase in passenger numbers also offers improved travel convenience for those looking to experience Munich beyond Oktoberfest. Visitors have the option to explore Munich’s English Garden with its wide network of paths or tour historical sites such as Nymphenburg Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle. Sports fans have the added option of watching Bayern Munich in action, with the team, captained by England striker Harry Kane, set to host Werder Bremen this Friday evening. Having several airline choices allows passengers to pick flights that suit their personal schedules.

The rise in non-stop services between Manchester and Munich emphasizes the opportunities for travelers from northern England to enjoy cultural events alongside leisure travel. The strengthened travel links enable visitors to take part in events like Oktoberfest while also exploring the city’s cultural and outdoor highlights. Visitors are able to plan their schedules more effectively, reducing potential travel difficulties and taking full advantage of Munich’s festivals and historic attractions.
