Avanti West Coast is cutting its weekday timetable around the Christmas period after the government approved temporary reductions designed to match lower seasonal demand. Hundreds of planned journeys will be removed from the winter timetable, reducing travel options on parts of the West Coast Main Line. Separate engineering work will bring further changes between Christmas and New Year, so passengers planning festive rail trips will need to check their journeys carefully.

Which Avanti Journeys Are Changing

  • Affected dates: 7–23 December 2026 and 4–7 January 2027.
  • Days: Reduced timetable Monday to Thursday.
  • Scale: Around 22 daily services will not run.
  • Affected routes: Services involving London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Crewe.
  • London–Manchester: Not included in these demand-led reductions.
  • Weekends: Current service levels are being maintained.
  • Christmas–New Year: Separate engineering works will mean further timetable reductions.

The Department for Transport says passenger numbers fall during December and many trains run with large numbers of empty seats, so the temporary cuts are intended to reduce subsidy costs. Avanti used a similar model during summer 2026, when selected weekday services were removed during quieter periods. The government says extra services could be restored if passenger demand turns out to be higher than forecast.

London–Manchester is the main exception, with the demand-led reductions not applying to the route because Christmas-market travel is expected to keep demand high. Birmingham, Liverpool and Crewe passengers will have less flexibility on the affected weekdays. Avanti has not yet published its complete December timetable, and its website says tickets are not released until schedules are confirmed, so exact departures should be checked before making fixed onward plans.

Anyone planning Christmas travel on the West Coast Main Line should avoid assuming their usual weekday train will run, particularly on Birmingham, Liverpool or Crewe journeys. Separate engineering work will also reduce services between Christmas and New Year, adding another possible change to longer itineraries. If a trip includes a hotel, flight or another fixed connection, wait for the confirmed train time before building the rest of the journey around it.
