China Eastern Airlines has announced a temporary ticket policy for passengers affected by Typhoon Matmo, which is disrupting services on October 5, 2025. The rules cover domestic, regional, and international flights with unused segments to or from Haikou, Bo’ao, Zhanjiang, and Beihai. To be eligible, tickets must have been issued or reissued by 12:00 on October 4, and cancellations need to be made between October 4 and the planned departure time.

China Eastern has outlined several options to assist passengers whose travel plans are disrupted by the typhoon. According to the airline’s guidance, eligible passengers may:

  • Change their flight once, free of charge, within three days before or after the original departure date.
  • Request a full refund for unused flight segments through the original booking channel.
  • For tickets already modified once, refunds will follow the usual fare rules.
  • Follow original fare conditions if their journey does not fall under the specified scope.

The updated measures are designed to provide more certainty when flight schedules are heavily impacted by severe weather. Rebooking at no charge lessens the burden of altering itineraries, and fee-free refunds reduce the risk of financial loss. Having flexible options is especially useful on routes prone to typhoon disruptions, as cancellations and delays may interfere with onward journeys. The new rules therefore allow passengers to respond more quickly to changes.

Practical steps are also highlighted in the policy. Passengers who have already checked in or chosen seats are advised to cancel those services first before requesting a refund or change. Passengers who have not confirmed their travel plans are advised to cancel before the flight’s scheduled departure to prevent issues. Cancellations may be completed through the booking channel, mobile app, or official mini-program.

The update highlights how airlines modify their operations in response to severe weather conditions. Being able to cancel or change flights without fees gives travelers added reassurance when schedules are uncertain. Although Typhoon Matmo may lead to short-term flight disruptions, the flexible ticket policies allow passengers to adjust plans more easily and reduce uncertainty. These measures provide travelers with practical support when air travel is disrupted by emergencies.
