Cardiff Rugby Trains Added as Return Queues Move
Rugby fans heading to Cardiff for Wales’ three November internationals will have extra trains, but getting home will involve a change of station for many local passengers. Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales are increasing services around matches at Principality Stadium, while GWR is requiring reservations on trains arriving before kick-off. New post-match queues will also separate regional passengers from those travelling longer distances.
Cardiff Rugby Trains and Match-Day Arrangements
- Matches: Wales v Japan, 7 November, 16:40; New Zealand, 14 November, 14:10; Australia, 21 November, 20:10.
- Operators: GWR and TfW; extra trains on all three Saturdays.
- GWR arrivals: Seat reservations required before each match.
- Return queues: Valleys and Vale of Glamorgan at Cardiff Queen Street.
- Exceptions: Ebbw Vale, Maesteg and GWR services use Cardiff Central.
- Access: Assisted queues at both stations.
- Booking: GWR and TfW journey planners.
GWR plans extra trains between Cardiff and Swansea, Newport, Bristol and London, while TfW has made more than 90 changes across the fixtures, adding carriages, retiming departures and scheduling additional services. The new Queen Street queuing arrangement responds to planned redevelopment at Cardiff Central, where previous waiting space will become unavailable. TfW says the switch creates nine dedicated queues instead of three; updated departures are in its journey planner.
Extra trains make same-day visits to central Cardiff more practical, particularly for supporters arriving from Bristol, Newport or Swansea. Principality Stadium is five minutes on foot from Cardiff Central, with Cardiff Castle and the Victorian shopping arcades nearby for anyone arriving early. City-centre road closures will run 12:30–21:00 on 7 November, 10:00–18:15 on 14 November and 16:00–midnight on 21 November.
Ticket checks will take place before and after the games, so buy a rail ticket before boarding or joining a queue. On eligible South Wales Metro journeys, TfW and CrossCountry accept pay-as-you-go: use the same contactless card or device to tap in and out. This excludes GWR services. Cardiff Bus Interchange will close during road restrictions, with buses diverted to other stops. Check the last departure after Australia’s late kick-off.
